PATIENCE Some things need time. Take time. Like restoring a car that was built in the same year that you were born. In my case, it means that that car has more than a century of traveling in its 'bones'. In the past two years I have been traveling too. A lot. I have seen many countries, met many people and had countless conversations about how things are built and how they should be built (for a better future for this planet and its inhabitants). Change is not fast. Change needs time.
In my job as International Business Developer for Metadecor, I still advocate external sunshading, energy efficiency, healthy buildings and beautiful architecture on an almost daily basis. I lecture students (and colleagues and acquaintances... sorry...) about circularity and responsible design. And I see things changing, but never with any hurry. Not the hurry I feel, after having written about sustainability for over thirty years and knowing the numbers, the scenarios and the consequences of the way we consume, live, build, travel... the way we use the resources of our Mother Earth. Do we have the luxury of patience? Do I feel comfortable when processes take time? In some aspects of my life I need patience more than anything. But sometimes... sometimes I curse the impatience I feel and the powerlessness that comes with it. Restoring that car gives me moments of contemplation that I desperately need. 'It is not the destination, it is the journey that counts', I hear more often than not. It is true. I will probably sell the car after it's finished and I have made that one roadtrip I bought it for. But hey, nothing can beat a little victory or a visible change for the better, once in a while. Caroline Kruit Image: cleaning the carburetor of my Austin 1300 Glider |
